The 412 YA: Building Faith and Confidence in a New Generation

Inspired by 1 Timothy 4:12, a ministry for young adults walking into life, faith, and leadership

This past August, our church launched a new ministry called The 412 YA (Young Adults), inspired by 1 Timothy 4:12“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”

Our mission is to fill the gap between high school and adulthood by offering a place for young adults to connect with others their age, grow in their relationship with Jesus, and build a faith they can stand on—and share their faith with others with confidence.

We currently meet weekly with an average of 15 young adults attending. Each week includes:

  • Shared meal; potluck style meal brought in by volunteers from the group
  • Conversation and laughter
  • Sharing your story; someone volunteers each week to share what Jesus is doing in their life
  • The Gospel story; each week someone articulates the gospel message, building comfort and confidence in sharing faith
  • Video lesson and discussion; we’ll watch a video lesson from RightNow Media, read corresponding scripture, then engage in questions and discussion.
  • Prayer time; taking time to bring prayer requests and closing the evening with prayer.

We’ve already gone through a variety of Scripture-based and topical studies, including:

  • Romans – by Michael Defazio
  • Don’t Give the Enemy a Seat at the Table – by Louie Giglio
  • 1 Peter – by Kyle Idleman
  • 1 & 2 Timothy – by Samir Deokuliar
  • Who Are You Following? – by Sadie Robertson

Currently: the Gospel of John – by Tony Evans

An exciting part of The 412 YA is the opportunity for young adults to step into leadership. Those who feel led can volunteer to lead a study within the group—an experience designed to help them grow not just in knowledge but also in confidence to lead others in faith, whether in our group or future communities they’re part of.

Outside of our regular weekly meetings, we took a fun trip to Cedar Point last October, and another group of us are headed back this August. We’ve also gone to Fort Wayne Putt Putt for mini golf and go-karts. There was also a group that volunteered to do some miscellaneous cleanup and tasks at Stillwater Equestrian Center in Woodburn. Later this year, we’re planning to help out with a community project by picking up litter along the roadside. We’ll also be looking for other ways to serve the communities around us.

As we continue to meet each week, our prayer is to keep doing what we’re doing: creating a space to grow, to share, to laugh, and to lead. In addition, we’re encouraging the young adults to begin volunteering in ministry—within the church and beyond.

We don’t just want these young adults to know Jesus; we want them to imitate Him—loving God and loving their neighbors, following His example in how He treated both His followers and those who didn’t yet know Him.

We’re incredibly encouraged by what God is already doing through The 412 YA, and we’re excited for what’s ahead.
